OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently announced a remarkable new goal for the company: by 2028, OpenAI aims to create an automated “AI researcher” capable of conducting scientific research independently. According to Altman and chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, the team is progressing toward developing AI systems that can not only assist with research but will eventually be able to deliver results on larger, complex projects without human intervention.
This milestone represents a major leap in artificial intelligence, bringing us closer to true autonomous scientific discovery. OpenAI’s strategy includes innovative algorithm development and significantly scaling up computational resources, with the aim of surpassing human-level performance in many critical domains.
