Amrish Puri (22 June 1932 – 12 January 2005) was a legendary Indian actor known for his powerful and iconic presence in Indian cinema and theatre. He appeared in more than 450 films across various Indian languages and internationally. Puri is most famous for his villainous roles, particularly as “Mogambo” in the Hindi film Mr. India (1987), which remains one of the most memorable villain characters in Indian film history. He is also internationally recognized for his role as Mola Ram in the Hollywood movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984).
Born in Nawanshahr, Punjab, Amrish came from a family connected to the film industry, with his elder brothers Chaman Puri and Madan Puri also being actors. He initially struggled and worked for a government insurance company before launching his acting career in theatre, where he won the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1979.
Puri’s deep, resonant voice and commanding screen presence made him the quintessential villain of the 1980s and 1990s in Bollywood. Despite being best known for antagonistic roles, he also portrayed positive supporting characters in many successful films such as Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Pardes, and Virasat, winning three Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actor.
Besides Hindi cinema, Amrish Puri worked in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Malayalam, and Marathi films, showcasing his versatility. He remains an enduring figure in Indian cinema for his distinctive style, memorable dialogue delivery, and strong performances both as a villain and a supporting hero. Puri passed away in 2005 but left behind an unparalleled legacy as one of Bollywood’s most iconic actors.
