BRAVE INDIA.
Saragarhi Day in India is observed annually on September 12 to commemorate the Battle of Saragarhi, a legendary last stand by 21 Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army against a much larger force in 1897. The Indian Army’s Sikh Regiment observes this day as a battle honour, and declared it a holiday in 2017 by the Punjab Government.
The Battle of Saragarhi
- Date:
September 12, 1897.
- Location:
An outpost called Saragarhi in the (now in Pakistan) North-West Frontier Province
- The Forces:
21 Sikh soldiers of the 36th Sikhs (now the 4th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment) defended the fort against an estimated 10,000 to 14,000 Pashtun and Orakzai tribal warriors.
- The Sacrifice:
The 21 soldiers, led by Havildar Ishar Singh, fought valiantly and chose to die in battle rather than surrender.
- Historical Significance:
It is considered one of the greatest last stands in military history. All 21 soldiers were posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit, a very high gallantry award.
Commemoration in India
- Regimental Tradition:
The Sikh Regiment of the Indian Army holds Saragarhi Day as a revered tradition, paying homage to the bravery of the 21 soldiers.
- Public Holiday:
In 2017, the Punjab government declared September 12 as Saragarhi Day, a public holiday to honor the soldiers’ sacrifice.
- Memorials:
The Saragarhi Memorial Gurudwara was built in Ferozepur to honor the soldiers, and the British also built an obelisk using burnt bricks from the Saragarhi fort.
Have a Proud Day
