19 Dec 2017 — The UN General Assembly has proclaimed 23 September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language. International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL) is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September every year along with International Week of the Deaf.

The choice of 23 September is the same date that the World Federation of the Deaf was established in 1951. The 2025 theme for International Day of Sign Languages is “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights”. This theme highlights that access to sign language is a fundamental human right, essential for deaf people to fully participate in society and realize other rights such as education, healthcare, and employment.

      Key aspects of the theme:

      • Foundation for Human Rights:

It emphasizes that sign language rights are not separate but foundational to the enjoyment of all other human rights for deaf people.

      • Equality and Inclusion:

The theme advocates for greater accessibility and inclusion by ensuring deaf people have the right to use and access their natural, fully-fledged languages in all aspects of life.

      • Alignment with UN Principles:

It aligns with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), promoting equality and dignity for deaf individuals worldwide.
